Hope everyone is having a great week...
Taking the optimistic approach that everyone included in this note will once again be hiring soon :) below are several suggestions on how to make a new employee feel welcome before, during, and just after their first day. Experts continue to believe that this slowdown is simply a small "ceasefire" in the war on talent, and that the little things will be key in retaining employees.
Please let me know if I can expound on any of the suggestions below!
Before a new employees starts:
- Send your new start a welcome letter from the president of the company
- Send a copy of the employee handbook
- Send any HR paperwork ahead of time so their first day is not filled with forms
During their first day:
- Make sure their work station is set up with supplies they will need
- Introduce the executive staff or key leaders in the company
- Take them out to lunch and introduce their coworkers or team
During their first week:
- Assign a peer mentor who will be in contact during their first 90 days
- Have this peer show them the job duties and include them in the social scene at work
- If the employee is new to the area, give them a map of local eateries or hot spots near your work
During their first month:
- Review expectations for the job and ask them for a self-assessment of their performance so far
- Ask how their experience has been so far and if they feel anything could be done differently.
