Bringing the Benefits of March Madness to Your Office

Even if you're not a basketball fan, you gotta admit that the NCAA Tournament (March Madness) is pretty cool.

Huge state colleges like Kansas and Wisconsin which have millions of dollars in support, big arenas, and gigantic recruiting budgets, can be ousted in one afternoon. Tiny Northern Iowa and Ivy League Cornell play on and are four wins from a national basketball title.

The emotion in the tournament is off the charts as well. Screaming fans, jubilant student-athletes, and proud alumni make the tourney all the more special.

Check out the attached article. Teams that make it to the Sweet Sixteen, (this weekend's games) can expect a 3% boost in enrollment applications, and the big winner of the tourney on average receives a 7-8% increase in apps.

So just from the images blasted to Americans showing ecstatic people supporting and playing for their school, the school received incredible interest they'd be unlikely to able to buy through any advertising. The correlation that I make is that when people see other people who are happy, they want to be a part of it.

Can that translate to companies? When employees tell their spouses, family, friends, and business partners that they are happy at work, it creates a positive image for that organization. When people involved in that employee's inner circle are seeking a new position or looking for a company to do business with, why wouldn't they choose the place where they know their friend is happy?

We don't have the benefit of CBS to beam our positive images across America, and we can't control how happy people are at their job, but we can start and lead by example. Here are 10 tips for enjoying your job more and being more happy at the office.
