So Summerfest 2009 is less than a month gone by---but it feels like forever ago...
I was thinking about my favorite all-time concerts at The Big Gig, and came up with these five gems:
(Yes, I'm at dork---I looked up the years. I've got some free time while on hold ok???)
5) Common-2006 I remember this show having a ton of energy on a perfect night at the opening day three years ago. Umm, I don't own a Common song. Should look at I Tunes tonight.
4) Weezer-2005 We somehow got free tickets or wristbands or something. This was during the peak of the album that had "Beverly Hills."
3) The Gufs-2007 This was their (to my knowledge) first public performance and was a great reminder why I (and many other college kids) loved this local band during school. Songs from their new album weren't bad either.
2) Gnarls Barkely-2008 Jessie and I stoked a spot on the bleachers ridiculously early and waited for hours for their 11:00 set. During their encore and "Crazy" the big bang fireworks went off.
1) Tom Petty-2002 The first of many annual trips to see Petty for Jess and I. Don't bill us Frantz Group, we kept these seats for the work in planning our company's SF summer outing. We've always credited this show as our first date.
AND:
Honorable Mention:
Huey Lewis and The News-1991?? My first memory of Summerfest. I just recall it being PACKED, and people stopping on the Hoan Bridge to see the show. Can't be safe.
Even though I try to stay positive, I do recall these duds as my worst concerts.
3) Lupe Fiasco-2009 You couldn't hear him! I just recall bass and flashing lights. Maybe I'm getting old.
2) Tom Petty and Pearl Jam-2007 Eddie Vedder stumbled through his set, then stormed back on stage to ruin several TP songs. The PJ faithful got totally wasted, some threw up, and then left before the end. Nice house guests.
1) BoDeans-2005 I just never saw the appeal with these guys, maybe it was from the Friends theme song. Anyway, it was 95 and crazy humidity---so maybe I was just dehydrated.
Have a great rest of the week
